BEGINNING BAND

Who:
1st Semester:
Homeschool students ages 10-18 with no prior musical experience.
2nd Semester:
Homeschool students ages 10-18 that have completed the first semester of beginning band. New students that are around the same playing level may audition with Ms. Meloy to see if they would be able to play with beginning band.
When: Wednesdays
1st Semester:
September 11 - December 11, 2024 (no rehearsal on November 26th)
2nd Semester:
January 15 - April 9, 2025 (there are no skipped rehearsals this semester)
Time: 10:30 - 11:30 P.M.
Where: Black Hills Community Church (618 E. Elk St. Rapid City)
Cost:
$100 + $25 yearly insurance/cleaning fee due at first rehearsal
The $25 yearly fee covers our cleaning cost as well as the liability insurance we now have to carry.
Concert Dress: White shirt, black pants, black shoes and socks. No logos on shirts.

1st Semester:
No prior experience on a band instrument necessary.
Beginning band instruments include: flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet, baritone, and trombone. If a student has studied 2 or more years of piano or other instrument, they will eligible to play percussion.
2nd Semester:
All returning members who have completed the first semester. New members who have completed up through page 11 of Standard of Excellence Book 1 or an equivalent lesson book may audition with Paula Meloy. We need students to be around the same level of note reading/ playing to join the existing band.

An instrument that is in good repair, Standard of Excellence Book 1, folding music stand, 3 ring binder (must be able to stay open on music stand), 12 plastic sheets, and 2 pencils.
2nd Semester:
Standard of Excellence Book 1, folding music stand, 3 ring binder (must be able to stay open on music stand), 12 plastic sheets, and 2 pencils.
***All students should arrive 10 minutes before rehearsal time, and be set up and ready to play at 10:20.
***All cell phones MUST be turned off and stored in instrument cases during rehearsals.
***Children must remain in the building at all times from the time they are dropped off until they are picked up.
We are not allowing any outside play.
***We are in a church who has graciously allowed us to use their space. Please take off shoes and boots at the door if they are muddy.
